Railway to introduce modern coach 'Anubhuti' in Rajdhani, Shatabdi trains

NEW DELHI: Railways on Tuesday proposed to introduce a modern coach "Anubhuti" with good ambience in the premier Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains providing higher travel comfort to passengers.

The travelling fare in such a coach will be priced separately, railway minister Pawan Kumar Bansal announced in his Budget speech.

"With increased popularity of Shatabdi and Rajdhani trains, there is also a demand for higher travel comfort. Responding to this need, railways will introduce one such coach in select trains which will provide an excellent ambience and latest modern facilities and services," he said.

Such coaches will be named 'Anubhuti' with commensurate fare structure, he said.

Besides, he said a pilot project will be launched in select trains to facilitate passengers to contact on-board staff through SMS/phone calls for prompt response for coach cleanliness and provide real time feedback.

Provision of announcement facility and electronic display board in trains for disseminating information to on-board passengers about approaching stations, train running, and arrival platform will also be there, he said.

He also announced provisions of free wi-fi facility on several trains to cater to the increasing aspirations and requirement of the youth and other customers.

Rail Budget 2013: Govt pushes for austerity as railways to lose Rs 24,600cr

NEW DELHI: Losses of the Indian Railways are estimated to increase to Rs 24,600 crore ($4.55 billion) in the financial year ending March 31 due to a sharp rise in input costs, resulting in "deterioration of services", railway minister Pawan Kumar Bansal said on Tuesday.

Presenting the annual Budget of his ministry, Bansal said the loss, which was Rs 4,955 crore in 2001-02, surged to Rs 22,500 crore in 2011-12 and is estimated to rise to Rs 24,600 crore in the current financial year.

And to cut the mounting losses, the railways would maintain financial discipline.

"Austerity and economy in expenditure will be observed by the railways rigorously and no wastage will be permitted," said Bansal.

He hoped that the fiscal measures taken by his ministry would help improve the railways' financial condition in the coming years.

"As a result of our consistent efforts at maintaining strict financial discipline during the year, the operating ratio is estimated at 88.8 percent. This is a source of great satisfaction as the operating ratio has consistently been over 90 per cent since 1997-98."

Bansal said the Indian Railways planned to invest Rs 63,363 crore ($11.5 billion) in the financial year beginning April 1 mainly on expansion of tracks and improving passenger safety measures.

The total planned investment for the current financial year has been lowered from Rs 60,100 crore to Rs 52,265 crore.

The Planning Commission has tentatively pegged the railways investment target for the 12th Five Year Plan period (2012-17) at Rs.5.19 lakh crore, with a budgetary support of Rs.1.94 lakh crore and railways internal resources of Rs 1.05 lakh crore.

"The thrust of the plan is on doubling of tracks, safety and passenger and staff welfare, for which I have increased the outlay from about Rs 11,410 crore in 2012-13 to Rs.13,220 crore, an increase of 16 per cent," Bansal said.

Bansal said the railway would get Rs 26,000 crore budgetary support in the current financial year to finance its plan expenditure.

Other sources of financing included Rs 14,260 crore from the railway's internal resources and Rs 2,000 crore from the railway's share in road safety fund.

There was a plan to raise Rs 15,103 crore from the market and mobilise Rs 6,000 crore through public-private-partnership (PPP) route to fund its expansion plans in 2013-14.

Bansal said 500 km of new railway lines would be built and 450 km of narrow and medium gauge lines would be converted into broad gauge lines in the financial year beginning April 1, 2013.

The government has also set a target to double 750 km of single railway lines.

Delhi, has seen the rise and fall of many empires which have left behind a plethora of monuments that the grandeur and glory of bygone ages . A city which traces its history to Mahabharata, the great epic tale of wars fought between estranged cousins , the Kauravas and the Pandavas for the city of Indraprastha. Mughals ruled Delhi in succession starting from Qutab-ub-din to Khiljis, Tughlaqs . The city of Delhi passed on to the hands of the British in 1803 AD. It was only in 1911, when the capital of British empire was shifted from Calcutta to Delhi, that Delhi got its present prestige. After independence also, a kind of autonomy was conferred on the capital but it largely remained a chief commissioners regime. In 1956 Delhi was converted into a Union territory and gradually the chief commissioner was replaced by a Lt. Governor. In 1991, the national capital territory Act was passed by the parliament and a system of diarchy was introduced under which, the elected Government was given wide powers; except law and order which remained with the central Government. The actual enforcement of the legislation came in 1993. New Delhi, the capital of India, sprawled over the west bank of the river Yamuna is one of the fastest growing cities in India. It is surrounded on three sides by Haryana and to the east, across the river Yamuna by Uttar Pradesh. Historically,

Helicopter crashes into crane in London's Vauxhall, kills two

A helicopter crashed into a crane on top of one of Europe's tallest residential blocks on Wednesday, killing two people as it burst into flames and threw plumes of smoke into the foggy air above central London.

Police said there was nothing to suggest a terrorism link to the crash
on the south bank of the River Thames in the British capital, where 52 commuters were killed in rush hour suicide bombings in 2005.
"There was a really loud bang," said Julie Marsden, who works in an office building near the crash site which is close to landmarks such as the headquarters of Britain's MI6 international intelligence agency and the Houses of Parliament.
"We saw the crane fall to the ground and this massive plume of black smoke," Marsden said.
